If you have already visited Kyoto's classic temples, consider the eastern side of Lake Biwa in autumn. Shiga offers historic temple gardens, stone steps and bamboo groves. Choose one or two daytime visits, followed by Kyorinbo's evening lights, for a more relaxed day than trying to cover every famous temple.
Kyorinbo is not one of the Koto Sanzan temples. Koto Sanzan refers collectively to Saimyo-ji, Kongorin-ji and Hyakusai-ji. Kyorinbo is in Azuchi-cho, Omihachiman. They can be included in the same Shiga trip, but actual driving time is needed between them.

The daily daytime opening season and evening illumination season have different dates. The garden can be visited in early November, but that does not mean evening lights have begun. The temple recommends entering the address into navigation. Its nearest station is JR Azuchi Station.
What to see at Kyorinbo: rocks, bamboo and evening reflections
Kyorinbo's gardens combine rock formations with trees and woodland. In daylight, look at the layers of large rocks, moss and foliage. At night, lighting picks out maple trees and bamboo, with pond reflections offering another perspective.
It suits visitors who enjoy pausing over a garden. Find a composition with your eyes before raising your phone. Avoid stopping for long on narrow paths, and never enter planted areas or step on moss for a photograph. Illuminations can be busy; being outside Kyoto does not guarantee solitude.

Which Koto Sanzan temples should you choose?
- Saimyo-ji: A good combination of historic architecture and gardens, with the main hall, three-storey pagoda and maple trees as highlights. Official 2026 information also lists a limited special viewing of the crowned Bishamonten statue, allowing culture and foliage to be combined.
- Kongorin-ji: The long approach, Jizo statues and main hall create an ascending journey. In autumn it particularly suits visitors happy to walk slowly. Reduce the programme first if members of your group find many steps difficult.
- Hyakusai-ji: Combine the temple approach, gardens and views towards the Koto plain. For evening events, check that year's announcement separately; Kyorinbo's illumination hours do not apply here.
To explore all three thoroughly, make them the main focus of a full day. If adding Kyorinbo at night, choose only one or two daytime temples and reconsider the plan based on accommodation, closing hours and energy levels.
Two possible day-trip routes
- Relaxed garden route: Depart your Kyoto or Osaka hotel → lunch and a short walk in Omihachiman → Kyorinbo garden in the afternoon → evening illumination → hotel. Any wait between daytime and evening visits must follow that day's ticket and re-entry rules.
- Historic temples and foliage: Hotel → one or two Koto Sanzan temples → early meal or rest → Kyorinbo illumination → hotel. Drop a daytime stop if traffic is slow.
The Metasequoia Avenue in Makino, Takashima, is in an area on the other side of Lake Biwa. It is not within walking distance of Kyorinbo or Koto Sanzan. To explore several lakeside areas, two days or an overnight stay usually allows more time. Sharing a prefecture does not make destinations adjacent.
Transport and transfers: how will you return after the lights?
Kyorinbo's official guidance gives about 10 minutes by taxi from JR Azuchi Station's north exit, or about 60 minutes on foot. Arrange transport after the evening visit in advance; an hour's walk in each direction is not a light stroll. Public transport users should confirm the return vehicle and train service; private charters need a clear meeting place and time.
A round trip from Osaka to Shiga with evening illumination means a later finish. Ryuko daily charters generally allow 10 hours from departure to return. Confirm expressway, parking and waiting arrangements in the quotation. A very early start followed by a return after the evening visit requires a total-duration check first.
Five things to confirm before booking
- Do your dates fall within Kyorinbo's November 14–December 6 illumination period?
- Are natural foliage, historic buildings or night photography your priority?
- How many slopes, stone steps and how much walking can everyone manage?
- Will dinner be before or after the evening visit, and do restaurant hours fit?
- Which Kyoto or Osaka hotel will you depart from, where will you finish, and will you have luggage?
Autumn colour depends on the year's weather. Even mid-to-late November plans should be adjusted to foliage updates near departure. For Shiga foliage sightseeing, evening return transport or a custom multi-day itinerary, contact Ryuko Japan Transfer with your dates and preferences.
