After a day of autumn foliage sightseeing, an evening at Kyoto Station can extend the experience. Recent additions to the station building's evening attractions include Hikari no Waemaki — Shiki no Kyo-yato at the 7th-floor East Square, which pairs well with the Grand Staircase lights, station architecture and dinner. It makes a short walk for your arrival day or the end of a sightseeing day.
The autumn leaves here are light art, rather than a natural maple grove. Visit temples or wooded hills for real foliage during the day, then return to the station for a different expression of Kyoto's seasons.

What is worth adding to your Kyoto Station visit?
| Attraction | Location and hours | Suggested plan |
|---|---|---|
| Hikari no Waemaki — Shiki no Kyo-yato | 7F East Square; officially listed year-round, 17:00–23:00; free | Enjoy a seasonal light sequence before or after dinner |
| Grand Staircase autumn foliage / Sagano Romantic Train autumn themes | October 23–November 17, 2026; official programme hours 15:00–22:00 | Stop at the station after a foliage sightseeing day |
| 2nd GNE Kyoto Station Building Arts Festival | October 17–November 3, 2026 | For early-November visitors; check each programme separately |
These are the officially announced opening or performance windows, not a promise that one sequence plays continuously. Events, maintenance and on-site use can affect viewing.
New highlight: seasonal light art in the 7F East Square
Hikari no Waemaki — Shiki no Kyo-yato turns Kyoto's four seasons into light imagery on walls and the surrounding space. The official introduction features spring cherry blossoms, summer fireflies and fireworks, Arashiyama's autumn foliage and winter snow at historic temples, presented with NAKED's involvement. It offers an easy way to enjoy Kyoto's seasonal imagery without travelling to another temple.
The East Square itself is open 10:00–23:00, with lights from 17:00. It also contains a station piano and a LEGO model of Kyoto Station. Official piano hours are 10:00–17:00; the square's evening opening does not mean the piano can be played at night. Follow station signs to the east side of the 7th floor for the light art. It is outside the ticketed railway platforms.
Grand Staircase: look for autumn themes until November 17
Graphical Illumination Plus uses LEDs and music to present seasonal patterns on the Grand Staircase. The official 2026 schedule places the autumn foliage and Sagano Romantic Train (autumn foliage) programmes on October 23–November 17, 15:00–22:00. For travel from November 18 onwards, consult the updated schedule rather than assuming these programmes continue.
View the full patterns from areas where stopping is permitted and keep walkways clear. With children, there is no need to climb the whole staircase just for a photograph. Use available lifts or escalators where permitted, and follow on-site routes around event barriers.
Early-November only: GNE is not a month-long event
The 2nd Kyoto Station Building Arts Festival, Geijutsu no Eki 2026/GNE, ends on November 3. The official overview lists 13:00–20:00, with venues in the station building and selected Kyoto temples. Venues, dates, fees and reservation rules vary by programme; the overview does not mean every event is open throughout those hours.
On November 1, the station's Muromachi-koji Square also hosts SOUND SQUARE KYOTO 2026 autumn music, officially listed 15:00–19:00 with free admission. This is a one-day event on November 1. If it has already ended when you read this, choose permanent night views or current programmes instead of travelling for an outdated event.
The Kyoto Station Building official recommended activities page warns that rooftop Ozora Square's Happuterrace is expected to close for construction from late November. Check announcements for the exact start date and affected area. Make the East Square and Grand Staircase your main destinations, and confirm rooftop and Skyway access separately.
An easy evening walk of around 60–90 minutes
- Deal with luggage and return tickets first.Confirm storage location, collection time and transport back to Osaka or your hotel.
- Allow about 20 minutes for the Grand Staircase lights.Adjust the time for viewing sequences and photographs.
- Follow signs to the 7F East Square; allow around 20–30 minutes.Enjoy the seasonal light imagery and rest along the way.
- Add dinner or souvenir shopping if time allows.Lift queues, events and crowds can affect the actual route.
For street views towards Kyoto Tower, consult the official guidance for the 4F Karasuma-koji Square. Normal official Skyway hours are 10:00–22:00, with STAR BRIDGE illuminated 17:00–22:00. Check construction and temporary closures as well, and avoid treating every area as a compulsory stop.
Which day works best?
- Your arrival evening in Kyoto: Take a short walk after checking in and having dinner to avoid rushing between attractions.
- After a Kyoto private charter: If your car service ends at Kyoto Station, enjoy the lights as independent walking time, after deciding what to do with your luggage.
- Rainy days or limited energy: Station night views can replace a more distant outdoor stop, though some square areas remain exposed to wind and rain.
Agree on parking or the pickup/drop-off point with your driver in advance. Kyoto Station is large: 'meet at Kyoto Station' is not precise enough. Specify an exit, map pin or meeting point. For Kyoto sightseeing and station transfers, contact Ryuko to discuss your itinerary.
