For autumn colours near central Osaka, Minoh offers a streamside walk, while Katsuo-ji offers temple visits, daruma dolls and autumn scenery. Both are in Minoh, but their walking requirements and transport differ. Decide how your family wants to spend the day before choosing stops, rather than packing too much into the itinerary.
The 2026 waterfall illuminations and Katsuo-ji evening visits are separate events with different dates. This guide follows official announcements and explains walking, parking and the return journey.

2026 evening events: check the dates first
| Event | Dates | Evening hours |
|---|---|---|
| Katsuo-ji: Kinshu no Yoimairi | Saturdays, Sundays and Japanese national holidays between November 1 and 29 | From sunset; last admission 20:00; closes 20:30 |
| Illuminations at Minoh Falls, the waterfall trail and nearby temples | Daily, November 14–December 6 | Sunset–21:30; may be cancelled due to weather or other conditions |
Katsuo-ji's official 2026 event announcement says visitors may stay from daytime through the evening on event days without a day/night changeover. Do not assume evening illuminations operate on ordinary weekdays.Illumination opening does not mean the leaves have all turned red, so check the Minoh tourism association's latest foliage updates before visiting.
Minoh Falls: enjoy the walk itself
From Hankyu Minoh Station to the waterfall, the trail is about 2.7 km. The park gives a reference walking time of about 40 minutes. This is one way; photographs, rests and crowds add time. If returning the same way, include both directions, lunch and breaks.
Walking beside the stream into the woods is a major part of the appeal. With older travellers or small children, reaching the waterfall need not be compulsory; turn back when appropriate for everyone's energy. Fallen leaves and stone surfaces can be slippery after rain, and you should walk slowly at night. Discuss limited walking needs before arrival rather than discovering the trail is longer than expected.
A chartered vehicle cannot drive directly to the waterfall. There is no car park inside the park, and ordinary vehicles cannot enter. You still need to walk from a lawful drop-off point nearby. Routes for wheelchairs, pushchairs and visitors with reduced mobility require separate confirmation of actual access conditions.
Katsuo-ji: temple visits, photographs and evening foliage
Katsuo-ji brings temple architecture, daruma scenery and mountain autumn colours together, suiting visitors who want to explore and photograph at leisure. Slopes and steps remain within the grounds; arriving by chartered vehicle does not eliminate walking.
If your date is an evening opening day, arrive in the afternoon to familiarise yourself with the route in daylight before staying for the lights after sunset. Families who prefer less time walking in the mountains can choose Katsuo-ji alone rather than rushing to the waterfall at night as well.
Parking reservations and mountain road restrictions: check before departure
- Katsuo-ji parking: The Minoh tourism association's 2026 event notice lists parking as fully reservation-based. Confirm the vehicle category, booking slot, entry/exit procedure and evening arrangements with the temple's current instructions. Do not simply drive there and wait for a space.
- Parts of Prefectural Route 43: The park announcement states that one-way traffic applies on weekends and national holidays from November 14 to December 6. Adjust the route to traffic restrictions and on-site directions.
- Public transport station names: Hankyu Minoh Station is suitable for the waterfall trail. Katsuo-ji also publishes autumn Day & Night bus information; check services from stations such as Minoh-kayano. These are different stations, so specify the name clearly when arranging a meeting.
A daytime waterfall walk followed by evening lights at Katsuo-ji is a possible combination, but walking ability, event dates, parking reservations and traffic must all fit. Choosing one place at a relaxed pace can still make a complete autumn day.
Two itinerary approaches from Osaka
- Nature walk: Osaka hotel → lunch near Minoh Station → waterfall trail and Minoh Falls → stay for the lights or return earlier depending on the date and energy levels.
- Temple and photography: Afternoon departure from your Osaka hotel → Katsuo-ji visit → brief evening foliage viewing after sunset → return to the hotel or a dinner venue in Osaka.
These are route suggestions, not fixed timetables. Foliage-season queues, mountain roads and parking can take time. Ryuko daily charters generally allow 10 hours from departure to return, including intercity travel, parking and waiting. Provide your hotel, passenger count, luggage, acceptable walking distance and desired finish time when enquiring.
What if it rains or the leaves are still green?
Assess event operation and leaf colour separately: lights may operate while leaves are still changing. Storm warnings, landslide alerts or significantly rising stream levels can lead to cancellation. If mountain walking is unsuitable that day, shorten outdoor stops and adjust the city itinerary. Historical peak-colour photographs help you choose a destination but cannot guarantee foliage on a particular day.
For an itinerary suited to older travellers, families or photography, ask Ryuko about an Osaka autumn foliage charter. Say whether you want an evening visit so event dates can be checked first.
