Set aside an evening for Kyoto's illuminated autumn leaves. Reflections in the ponds, temple roofs under the lights and the cool air beyond the gates create a different experience from a daytime visit. For a first visit, we recommend that you choose one main attraction and explore at leisure after dinner, allowing time for queues and walking.
The temples have different opening dates in 2026. We checked official information from Eikando, Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji to help you choose a visit that fits your dates.

2026 illumination dates at a glance
| Attraction | 2026 dates | Admission and closing | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eikando (Zenrin-ji) | November 20–December 6 | Admission 17:30–20:30; closes 21:00 | Pond reflections and traditional gardens; separate daytime and evening sessions |
| Kodai-ji | October 23–December 13 | Lights from 17:00; last admission 21:30; closes 22:00 | Higashiyama walks and illuminated gardens |
| Kiyomizu-dera | November 21–November 30 | From 17:30; last admission 21:00; the events page lists closing at 21:30 | Temple stage and night views; official notice says no reservation required |
An illumination period does not guarantee peak red foliage every day. Foliage varies with temperature, rain, tree species and location. Check Kyoto's official autumn foliage updates before booking. Last admission is not a recommended arrival time: allow time for queues and exploring.
Eikando: a classic choice for autumn reflections
Eikando suits visitors who want gardens to be the focus of their evening. The illuminated pond, bridges and treetops create layers of scenery. Pause to enjoy the reflections rather than rushing to cover every corner.
For the 2026 evening visit, admission for adults and junior high school students and older is JPY 1,000. Daytime temple treasure exhibition tickets and evening tickets are separate. Daytime visitors must leave before the 17:00 closing and cannot remain for the evening on a daytime ticket. The temple also asks visitors to avoid arriving by private car. Transfers must use permitted pickup and drop-off areas; the temple entrance is not a fixed parking point.

Kodai-ji: combine your visit with dinner and a Higashiyama walk
Kodai-ji has a longer evening opening season. Visitors arriving in early November, before Eikando's evening sessions begin, can consider it first. Garden lighting and projection displays in the Hojo front garden add another dimension to the natural autumn colours.
The official admission page lists adults at JPY 800 and junior/senior high school students at JPY 400. During special evening openings, visitors are not required to leave between the daytime and evening sessions and purchase a new ticket. Check the day's announcement for changes. Nearby Nene-no-Michi and Yasaka can be combined with a visit, but paving stones, slopes and crowds increase walking time.
Kiyomizu-dera: check your dates for this shorter season
The 2026 special autumn evening visits run for just ten days, November 21–30. If the temple stage is a priority, confirm those dates before arranging restaurants, transport and hotels. The temple's October 28 notice explicitly says reservations are unnecessary; queues may still form.
The surrounding streets have many slopes and can be crowded. With older travellers or young children, reduce additional shopping and long walks between attractions. Avoid planning to arrive only minutes before last admission.
Two more relaxed evening itineraries
- Garden route: Spend the afternoon around Okazaki or Nanzen-ji → early dinner → Eikando illumination → return to the hotel. Decide whether to enter daytime attractions according to their hours and your energy.
- Higashiyama route: Afternoon walk in Higashiyama → dinner → choose Kodai-ji or Kiyomizu-dera → return to the hotel. Visiting both requires a fresh estimate based on dates, crowds and walking ability.
If you want to return to Osaka after the illuminations, adjust your departure later to fit the evening visit. The 10-hour daily charter runs from departure until return, including intercity travel, waiting and parking. Adding an evening visit after a very early departure can exceed the allowance. Provide your hotel, date, passenger count and desired finish time so that a workable plan can be confirmed.
What to bring and photography tips
Bring a warm layer and wear comfortable shoes with good grip. Wait for still water to photograph reflections; lowering your phone's exposure often looks more natural than brightening the entire scene. Follow on-site photography rules. Do not use tripods or flash without permission, or block narrow paths for long periods. Popular attractions can remain busy at night, so keep your plans flexible.
For hotel transfers, travel with older family members or a late return to Osaka, contact Ryuko about Kyoto transport and specify which illumination you would like to visit.
